Author María del Carmen González Martín will launch her new children’s book, Los pequeños del Marianne, this Thursday at the Center for Popular Canarian Culture in San Cristóbal de La Laguna to promote environmental education through local coastal narratives.

Children’s literature in the Canary Islands has a new addition with the release of Los pequeños del Marianne (The Little Ones of the Marianne) by María del Carmen González Martín, known as "Mica." The Center for Popular Canarian Culture (CCPC) will host the official book launch this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at their headquarters, located at 1 Daute Street in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

Supported by the La Laguna City Council and the CCPC, the book moves beyond a traditional story format to offer an episodic narrative. The plot is set in Bajamar at the Marianne rock pool—a coastal spot famous for teaching generations of locals how to swim. Mica, an experienced educator, tells the story of a group of children interacting with marine life and shows how these experiences in the Atlantic ecosystem can shape their lives at home and in the classroom.

This project highlights the importance of using the local environment as a teaching tool. According to the author, the book aims to connect academic learning with the geography of the municipality. At the launch event, Mica will be joined by Wilmer Fernando Rodríguez, Rosa Sánchez, and Adriana Acosta to discuss how the book bridges oral tradition, marine conservation, and the education of future generations.
