Tenerife is suffering from illegal trade and crime: entrepreneurs are sounding the alarm

In southern Tenerife, business owners are sounding the alarm about unregulated street vending, crime, and government inaction, which threaten the island's tourist image.

In the south of Tenerife, merchants, hotel owners, and restaurateurs are sounding the alarm. They say that due to spontaneous street trading right outside their establishments, disorder, and rising crime, it is becoming simply impossible to work. This threatens popular tourist destinations on the island.

Entrepreneurs are not against street trading in general, but they want it to be organized in other places, not where they operate according to the rules, pay taxes, and provide jobs. As it stands now, it is unfair competition that causes them losses.

The problem is not only about money, entrepreneurs say. Illegal street trading is often associated with counterfeiting and drugs in tourist areas. Some shopping centers have even closed their restrooms to prevent drug use there. According to the entrepreneurs themselves, "sometimes it gets scary."

Adding to all this is prostitution, organized groups dividing the streets, and thefts of wallets, bags, and phones. Because the police are doing nothing, and the authorities cannot figure out who is responsible for what, many entrepreneurs have to hire security to protect their customers and make them feel safe.

The Organization of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Southern Tenerife (CEST) is asking the authorities to take urgent measures to restore safety, cleanliness, and normal business conditions in tourist areas. "We cannot allow the inaction of the authorities to spoil the image of our island, and with it, the economy and the jobs of thousands of families," they say.

In this sector, it is emphasized that the lack of control affects the lives of locals and the impressions of tourists, which damages the reputation of Tenerife. They demand immediate action before the situation becomes completely uncontrollable and the damage to the image is irreparable.
