The Mercas Network convened in Tenerife to establish a new strategic roadmap focused on digitalization, sustainability, and workforce renewal to strengthen national food logistics.

The Mercas Network recently held a two-day strategic meeting in Tenerife, marking a major shift in the future of national food logistics. Leaders from the 24 units that make up this public network met to discuss how the sector is evolving, with a new focus on digitalization, sustainability, and bringing in a new generation of workers.

Tenerife was chosen as the host for the May 27–28 sessions for good reason. Despite the challenges of being an island, Mercatenerife has become a leading logistics hub, achieving its best financial results in its 51-year history in 2025. Today, the site supports over 100 companies and 600 farmers, serving as a vital link in the island’s food supply.

During the event, experts analyzed how to update infrastructure to support a circular economy. Reducing waste and managing resources were top priorities, driven by new environmental and social regulations. Executives also highlighted the urgent need to attract young talent, noting that the future of farming and modern distribution depends on it.

Beyond the formal meetings, the delegation—led by Mercasa president José Miñones Conde—toured local banana plantations to see how irrigation and production systems work in practice. They also examined how Mercatenerife successfully moves local produce into larger distribution networks.

The meeting, which included local officials Lope Afonso and Valentín González, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in fixing supply chain issues. The new roadmap established in Tenerife confirms that the Mercas Network is not just an economic driver, but a key player in building a more resilient food system that meets 2030 sustainability goals.
