Master Shin Named ‘Adoptive Son of Tenerife’ for Decades of Cultural Integration

Master Shin has been named an "Adoptive Son of Tenerife," an honor from the Island Council that recognizes his nearly 50-year commitment to cultural and sports integration in the Canary Islands. This title highlights the significant social impact of the South Korean native, who has successfully bridged the gap between two very different cultures.

Born in Seosan, South Korea, Shin began training in taekwondo and hapkido as a child. Before moving to Spain in 1977, he was already an experienced instructor with the Korea Hapkido Association, a trainer for the U.S. Eighth Army, and a competitive Thai boxer.

When he opened his first school on Calle San Francisco in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he brought a unique teaching style. Rather than focusing solely on competition, Shin emphasized physical well-being, self-defense, and ethical values. This philosophy has shaped his work with generations of island residents.

One of his most notable achievements began in the 1990s, when he promoted a cultural exchange between Canarian wrestling and the traditional Korean sport of ssireum. His efforts helped local athletes compete successfully on the international stage and highlighted the shared heritage of both regions.

In addition to his martial arts work, Master Shin has provided acupuncture services on the island since his arrival. By combining sports, traditional medicine, and community building, he has become a key figure in the Korean community in Tenerife. Now 74, he receives this honor as a reflection of a lifetime spent turning his dojo into a space for education, coexistence, and personal growth.
