Massive Seaweed Accumulation Restricts Access to Playa Chica in El Médano
A significant accumulation of seaweed has restricted access to Playa Chica in El Médano, a recurring natural phenomenon driven by local tidal and weather conditions.
Playa Chica in El Médano was covered in a large amount of seaweed this morning, limiting space for beachgoers. According to Diario de Avisos, the accumulation of plant debris has restricted access to the sand, a recurring event for this part of the Granadilla de Abona coastline.
This phenomenon, known as "beach wrack," is caused by a mix of local weather and ocean conditions. Because El Médano is highly exposed to strong trade winds and currents, marine vegetation is often detached from the ocean floor during periods of high tides or rough seas. The waves then wash this organic matter onto the shore.
While the sight may be surprising to locals, it is a natural part of the marine ecosystem’s nutrient cycle. The buildup serves as a reminder of how the Atlantic Ocean constantly shapes and transforms the beaches of southern Tenerife.
