Marqués de Murrieta Brings World-Class Rioja Wines to Tenerife
Historic Rioja winery Marqués de Murrieta hosted a prestigious wine tasting event in Tenerife, featuring its acclaimed wines and solidifying its presence in the Canary Islands' burgeoning wine culture.
Following the success of 'The Wine Gallery,' an event that recently brought together over 80 wineries from Spain and abroad in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, wine culture is once again a focus in the Canary Islands. This time, it's with the arrival of Marqués de Murrieta in Tenerife. This historic Rioja winery, founded in 1852, is a world-renowned example of excellence and quality. The event saw top Canary Islands restaurants collaborate with iconic Rioja wines.
Held this Tuesday at the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the event was led by Toño Armas, founder of El Gusto por el Vino. Armas, a leading wine expert in the region, believes "wine is food for the soul, a thread that connects territories, people, and emotions." He organised the gathering to offer Canary Islands professionals a unique experience. Armas highlighted that "the Marqués de Murrieta winery is among the top 10 wineries in the world, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have it in Tenerife."
The lunch was overseen by Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell and president of Marqués de Murrieta. He has been instrumental in the winery's modernisation and global recognition. Under his leadership, Murrieta has been named "Best Winery in the World" by Great Wine Capitals. It has also achieved significant accolades, including 100 Parker points and Wine Spectator naming Castillo Ygay the best wine in the world. This makes it the Spanish wine most frequently awarded 100 points by international critics. Attendees, including chefs and owners of the island's top restaurants, sommeliers, distributors, and prominent figures from the cultural and business sectors, sampled wines that represent Rioja's rich history. These included Castillo Ygay, Dalmau, Capellanía, and the latest vintages of Marqués de Murrieta.
A highlight of the event was the first presentation in the Canary Islands of Castillo Ygay. This wine is consistently recognised as one of the world's finest and a symbol of Riojan excellence. Produced only in exceptional years, its prestige makes it a global oenological treasure. This event further solidifies Marqués de Murrieta's presence in the Canary Islands and strengthens its ties with the local food and drink industry. The winery also announced a new partnership with El Gusto Por El Vino, which will make these wines available to a growing audience that appreciates high quality and tradition.
Founded in 1852 by Don Luciano Murrieta, who created the first fine wine from Rioja and pioneered its export to America, the winery is at the very heart of Rioja's origins. Now available in over 100 countries, Murrieta is a significant global ambassador for Spain.
Since 1983, the Cebrián-Sagarriga family has led a modernisation effort that has turned the brand into an international icon. The winery's success is a result of combining innovation, tradition, and excellence, earning it the industry's most prestigious awards.
