Manolo Sánchez Retrospective at La Laguna Convent Until Nov 15
La Laguna's Convent of Santo Domingo is hosting a retrospective exhibition until November 15 dedicated to Tenerife artist Manolo Sánchez, hailed as a "key figure in contemporary Canarian painting."
The old Convent of Santo Domingo in La Laguna is currently hosting a special exhibition until November 15. It's a retrospective dedicated to the Tenerife artist Manolo Sánchez. The City Council describes him as a "key figure in contemporary Canarian painting," noting that his internationally recognized work is celebrated for its use of light, color, and a deep connection to his homeland.
Manolo Sánchez (1930-2023) was born in Tenerife's capital but lived almost his entire life in La Laguna. He previously exhibited at the same Convent of Santo Domingo in 2021. That show, titled "Estampas de identidad canaria" (Scenes of Canarian Identity), featured over 170 works, guiding viewers through the landscapes, places, and people that have shaped the history of the Canary Islands.
Sánchez had a long and varied career, which also included drawing and caricature. In 1966, he presented "Acuarela experimental" (Experimental Watercolor) alongside Raúl Tabares (1928-2005) at the Ateneo de La Laguna. This collection of works was considered a significant moment for watercolor painting at the time.
