Man Sentenced to Prison for Violent Assault in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sentenced a man to two and a half years in prison for a violent assault in the Los Gladiolos neighborhood. The court took into account that the defendant paid 7,000 euros in damages before the trial, which served as a mitigating factor. Once his prison term is complete, he will be subject to a four-year restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting the victim or coming within 500 meters of him.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2023, and stemmed from a dispute over drug debts that began when both men met in prison. According to the court, the attacker approached the victim, who was riding an electric bicycle, and demanded both money and the bike. When the victim refused, the attacker punched and kicked him, causing him to hit a metal railing.

Medical reports confirmed the victim's account, noting that he suffered cuts to his lip and the loss of four teeth. The court rejected the defendant’s attempt to use a work-related alibi, noting that the intensity of the attack showed a clear intent to cause serious physical harm. While the defendant was charged with attempted robbery, he was acquitted of that specific count, though his actions did result in the destruction of the victim's bicycle.

The investigation was complicated by a lack of eyewitness testimony. The victim’s mother was present during the attack, but due to neurological issues from previous strokes, she could only recall helping her son afterward. Throughout the proceedings, the defendant maintained his innocence, claiming the 7,000-euro payment was simply a strategy to avoid jail time. The case highlights the ongoing issue of violence used to settle debts in marginalized communities, a practice the courts continue to treat with strict legal consequences when it results in permanent injury.
