Man Sentenced to 23 Years for Violent Highway Attack and Stabbing
A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 23 years and nine months in prison for a violent 2023 highway attack involving gender-based violence, attempted murder, and illegal detention.
A complex criminal case has concluded following a court ruling regarding a violent incident on the TF-1 highway in the early hours of December 24, 2023. The 28-year-old defendant admitted to all charges, allowing for a plea agreement that avoided a public trial and resulted in an immediate sentencing.
The court sentenced the man to 23 years and nine months in prison. He has also been ordered to pay 180,500 euros in compensation for moral damages. While prosecutors initially sought a 30-year sentence, they agreed to the reduced term following the defendant's confession.
The charges included illegal detention, aggravated assault related to gender-based violence, serious threats, reckless driving, verbal abuse, and driving without a license. The incident began after the aggressor encountered his ex-partner and her companion, professional dancer Carlos Redondo, at a nightlife venue. He followed them onto the highway, where he intentionally rammed their vehicle. After the collision, the man stabbed Redondo twice and held the woman against her will.
Redondo’s life was saved by an off-duty National Police sub-inspector who happened to be driving by. The officer provided critical first aid to stop the bleeding until emergency services arrived.
This case underscores the dangers of gender-based violence and the use of vehicles as weapons. By opting for a plea agreement, the Spanish judicial system was able to provide a swift resolution, sparing the victims the further trauma of a public trial.
