Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Fatal Stabbing in San Matías Plea Deal
A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a fatal stabbing in San Matías following a plea agreement that includes compensation, a restraining order, and eventual deportation.
A legal case involving a fatal stabbing in the Santa Cruz neighborhood of San Matías has concluded with a plea agreement. By avoiding a jury trial, the resolution spares those involved from the prolonged uncertainty and emotional strain often associated with violent crime proceedings.
The defendant, a 38-year-old man, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for the death of a 30-year-old man with whom he shared an abandoned property. In addition to the prison term, the court has ordered the defendant to pay 180,000 euros in compensation to the victim’s son. He is also subject to a 500-meter restraining order and a 14-year ban on contacting the victim's family. Once he has served seven and a half years of his sentence, he will be deported from Spain and barred from returning for ten years.
The incident occurred in late February 2025, when the two men got into an argument after the defendant tried to evict the victim from the property they were sharing. The dispute escalated into a fatal attack with a large blade. The defendant has been in custody since January 30.
The case has drawn attention due to the stark contrast between the violence of the crime and the defendant’s standing in the community. Local residents described him as an integrated member of the neighborhood who received help with food and hygiene from his neighbors. He was even known to participate in local events, having once played one of the Three Wise Men in a Christmas celebration. This tragic outcome highlights how tensions over housing insecurity can escalate unexpectedly, turning a precarious living situation into a scene of violence.
