Man Remanded in Custody After Attempted Sexual Assault in Tenerife Nightlife District
A man has been remanded in custody in Tenerife after allegedly posing as a friend to abduct and sexually assault an unconscious woman in a Los Cristianos nightlife area.
Safety in nightlife areas is back in the spotlight after a man was arrested and remanded in custody in southern Tenerife. The incident, which occurred on March 15 in the San Telmo area of Los Cristianos, highlights the risks people face when they are unconscious in public and the vital role of bystanders in preventing abuse.
According to investigators from the Family and Women’s Assistance Unit (UFAM), the suspect used deception to carry out the attack. After the young woman fainted inside a venue, the man pretended to be her friend. This ruse allowed him to bypass other customers who had initially stepped in to help. He managed to lead the victim out of the building, but his behavior raised red flags for witnesses, who grew concerned because the woman was clearly unable to care for herself. They decided to follow the pair.
Police were able to identify and locate the suspect by reviewing security footage from the venue and nearby businesses, as well as by interviewing those who witnessed the scene. Due to the severity of the alleged crimes, a judge has ordered the man to be held in prison without bail.
This case highlights the importance of safety protocols in hospitality venues and the need for greater public awareness. Under Spanish law, taking advantage of someone who is unconscious or unable to resist is a serious factor in cases involving sexual assault. The quick thinking of the witnesses, who remained vigilant despite the suspect’s claims, was essential in helping police reconstruct the events and ensuring the case could proceed to court.
