A 48-year-old man died following a fatal canyoning accident in the Teno massif's Bujame ravine in Tenerife.

The dangers of adventure sports in the Canary Islands were highlighted again today following a fatal accident in the Bujame ravine, located in the Teno massif. According to the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 1-1-2, a 48-year-old man died despite a rapid response from rescue teams.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. in a rugged, difficult-to-access area of Tenerife. The steep, unstable terrain made the rescue operation particularly challenging for the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) and the Tenerife Fire Consortium. When specialists reached the man, he was in cardiorespiratory arrest with a severe head injury. Despite immediate attempts to resuscitate him, medical personnel were unable to save his life and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Managing emergencies in such high-mountain environments requires precise coordination. Once judicial authorization was granted, a GES helicopter hoisted the man’s body to the La Guancha helipad. Meanwhile, Civil Guard officers and firefighters secured the area to assist the remaining three members of the expedition, who were unharmed and later evacuated by land.

This tragedy underscores the risks of canyoning in technically demanding areas, where even a minor error or a sudden geological shift can have fatal consequences. The extensive rescue effort—which involved the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), the Canary Islands Police, and local police from Buenavista del Norte—highlights the ongoing pressure on emergency services as adventure sports continue to grow in popularity across the archipelago. The deceased has been placed in the custody of judicial authorities for further investigation.
