Man Arrested in Tenerife for Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse
A 63-year-old man has been arrested in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the domestic abuse of an elderly woman and the severe mistreatment of her pet.
A 63-year-old man has been arrested in the Los Gladiolos neighborhood of Santa Cruz de Tenerife following a domestic violence and animal abuse incident. Local police have placed the man, identified as J.F.M.M., in judicial custody. Authorities are using the case to highlight the importance of reporting signs of abuse immediately by calling 1-1-2.
Police were called to the home at noon on Sunday. Upon arrival, they found an 86-year-old woman on the floor in need of urgent medical care. She was stabilized at the scene before being taken to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital for further evaluation.
During the search of the property, officers discovered a pet in critical condition. The animal had suffered severe injuries, apparently caused by a dumbbell found nearby that appeared to have biological remains on it. With the help of Civil Protection, the pet was rushed to a veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.
A witness at the scene told investigators that the suspect had a history of intimidating the victim and had previously threatened to harm the pet. When the man returned to the home during the police operation, he admitted to the acts. He was subsequently arrested and taken to a health center.
This incident reflects a growing concern regarding the link between domestic violence and animal cruelty. Under the Spanish Penal Code, both are treated as serious crimes, with animal abuse carrying potential prison time due to the vulnerability of pets in violent households. The case is currently under investigation as authorities determine the next legal steps.
