Man Arrested for Homicide of Tourist Met via Dating App in Gran Canaria
A man has been arrested in Tenerife for the homicide of an elderly tourist in Gran Canaria, highlighting a growing trend of criminals using dating apps to target and exploit vulnerable visitors.
The dangers of online dating apps have been highlighted once again following the arrest of a man accused of homicide in Gran Canaria. According to La Provincia/Diario de Las Palmas, the case underscores how criminals are increasingly using these platforms to target victims.
Police investigations into the death of an 84-year-old tourist in a Maspalomas apartment last March revealed that the victim had met his attacker through a dating app. The suspect, who was eventually arrested in Tenerife, reportedly used these apps to specifically target tourists, believing that because they were only visiting temporarily, they would be less likely to report crimes.
Authorities say the suspect’s criminal activity went beyond simple theft; in some documented cases, he allegedly stole up to 20,000 euros from his victims.
The fatal incident in Maspalomas occurred when the elderly victim tried to stop the man from robbing him. During the struggle, the victim fell and suffered a fatal brain injury. Following the incident, the suspect fled to Tenerife, where he continued to use dating apps to find new targets until his arrest.
Police are now closely monitoring how criminals use these digital platforms to exploit others. The suspect remains in custody while the investigation continues, serving as a stark reminder of the risks involved when meeting strangers online.
