Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase and Police Vehicle Ramming in La Laguna
A 39-year-old man was arrested in San Cristóbal de La Laguna after leading police on a high-speed chase, ramming two patrol vehicles, and testing positive for drugs.
A 39-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning in San Cristóbal de La Laguna following a dangerous high-speed chase through the San Matías neighborhood. The suspect, identified as J.P.M., reportedly tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.
The incident began when police spotted a van speeding and attempted to pull the driver over. The man refused to stop, leading officers on a pursuit through local streets. The situation turned violent when the suspect deliberately rammed two police vehicles, disabling both. During the confrontation, one officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck while attempting to reach the driver.
After abandoning his van, the suspect tried to flee on foot, sliding down an embankment before police eventually found him hiding near a dumpster. He was taken to a medical center for evaluation before being handed over to the National Police to face charges of reckless driving.
Local authorities have expressed growing concern over the rise in drug-related traffic offenses. Under the Spanish Penal Code, driving under the influence while endangering others can lead to prison time, especially when the suspect resists arrest and damages public property. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the charges.
