A 39-year-old man has been remanded in custody after a high-speed chase in Tenerife led to the seizure of 230 kilograms of hashish and the destruction of a police vehicle.

A 39-year-old man is in custody following a dangerous high-speed chase in Tenerife that highlights the growing risks officers face when intercepting drug shipments in populated areas.

The incident occurred between Las Chafiras and Las Galletas. It began when the suspect, a resident of Arona, refused to stop for the Civil Guard and instead attempted to flee. During the pursuit, he drove recklessly, traveling against traffic and colliding with a police vehicle, which was left unusable. His actions caused significant property damage and put pedestrians and other drivers at serious risk.

Officers eventually stopped the van and discovered 230 kilograms of hashish packed into six bales.

The man now faces multiple charges, including drug trafficking, serious disobedience, and reckless driving. A judge has ordered him to be held in preventive detention, reflecting the severity of combining drug smuggling with actions that endanger public safety. Authorities are now working to trace the origin and intended destination of the drugs as part of an ongoing investigation into trafficking routes in the Canary Islands.
