Madrid Event Marks Centenary of Playwright Ángel Guimerá
Madrid’s Espacio Price hosts "Guimerá, Voices of a Theater" today to commemorate the centenary of playwright Ángel Guimerá’s death through expert panels, film screenings, and discussions on his enduring cultural legacy.
As we mark the centenary of his death, Ángel Guimerá y Jorge—a towering figure in turn-of-the-century Hispanic literature—is once again the focus of cultural debate. To commemorate the anniversary, Madrid’s Espacio Price will host an event today at 7:00 p.m. titled Guimerá, Voices of a Theater, which explores the playwright's lasting influence on the modern stage.
The event aims to go beyond a simple history lesson, instead examining how Guimerá’s work remains relevant today. A panel of experts, including Aranza Coello, Idaira Santana, and Valentín Rodríguez, will lead a discussion on the portrayal of women in his plays. This topic is especially timely as theater historians re-examine female archetypes in classic literature and explore why the Canarian author’s storytelling still resonates with 21st-century audiences.
The program also bridges the gap between literary tradition and modern performance. It features the screening of Interludio Guimerá, a documentary directed by Lamberto Guerra and supported by the Autonomous Organization of Culture, alongside the dance film A Bene Placito. The evening will conclude with a Q&A session with creators Lamberto Guerra and Emiliana Battista, offering a chance to discuss how they adapt and reinterpret a legacy that remains as powerful today as it was when the writer passed away in 1924.
