Méndez Recaptures Rare Teide Sunset Alignment From Lanzarote
Photographer Juan Méndez once again captured a rare photo of the sun setting precisely over Teide volcano from Lanzarote, almost exactly one year after his previous viral shot.
A year after capturing one of the most amazing photos of the Canarian sky, photographer Juan Méndez returned to the Lanzarote mountain. From this spot, on rare days, you can see Teide, the volcano on Tenerife, almost 300 kilometers away, as the sun sets.
The result was spectacular once more: the sun setting precisely over the outline of the Tenerife volcano. This happened at almost the exact same time and place as the incredible sight he captured last year.
"Everything indicated it wouldn't be visible," Méndez shared on Instagram. "The sky was covered and the horizon was blocked. But some days, you just have to try. If I had given up, this moment wouldn't exist."
He was right. The clouds parted just in time, letting him not only take the photo but also record a timelapse video of the sun lining up with Spain's highest mountain.
He took the photo on October 30th, the same date as last year. Méndez said this coincidence "has become magical," especially since it's also his son's birthday.
This rare optical event, only seen when weather conditions are perfect, is now a famous sight for people who love landscape photography and amateur astronomy. Last year, Méndez's photos quickly spread online and were even featured in a big story in the newspaper El Día.
With this latest photo, Juan Méndez proves again that the sky over the Canary Islands is a special place, where luck, light, and patience come together to create truly unique moments.
Seeing Teide line up with the sun from Lanzarote is a rare and beautiful sight. And Méndez's dedication shows once more that being patient can truly pay off.
