Louisa Yousfi to Discuss Reclaiming Marginalized Identities at TEA Tenerife
Essayist Louisa Yousfi will discuss the reclamation of marginalized identities through her lecture, Our Sun of Barbarism, this Saturday at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes.
Essayist and literary analyst Louisa Yousfi will explore how marginalized groups can reclaim labels imposed by those in power during a talk this Saturday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Hosted by TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, the lecture, titled Our Sun of Barbarism, begins at 12:00 p.m. as part of the institution’s critical thinking series.
Yousfi’s work moves beyond traditional views on integration, focusing instead on how descendants of the French colonial diaspora define their own identities. She argues that the term "barbarian"—long used to exclude and alienate—can be reclaimed as a form of cultural resistance. Rather than trying to fit into established norms, she suggests that turning this stigma into a tool for political expression allows for true aesthetic and linguistic freedom.
The event is part of the No-Todo (Not-All) series, a project curated by a multidisciplinary team including Roberto Gil, Yaiza Hernández Velázquez, Inés Plasencia, Rocío Robles Tardío, Néstor Delgado, Narelys Hernández, Joel Peláez, Alejandro Castañeda, and Sergio Rubira. The series aims to challenge biased historical narratives and create a space for discussing alternative futures.
The lecture will be delivered in French with simultaneous translation provided. Attendance is free until the venue reaches capacity. Yousfi’s visit highlights the center’s commitment to exploring the decolonization of thought and the complexities of identity in modern Europe.
