Los Realejos Showcases Sustainable Gastronomy at GastroCanarias 2026
Los Realejos showcased its commitment to sustainable tourism and local gastronomy at the 11th annual ‘GastroCanarias’ fair through a series of interactive events highlighting "zero-kilometer" ingredients and regional culinary traditions.
Los Realejos made a strong impression at the 11th annual ‘GastroCanarias’ fair, held from May 19 to 21, 2026. Rather than simply showcasing products, the municipality used the event to highlight its unique local identity and sustainable tourism model. Their stand, titled ‘Gastronomic Reflections,’ served as a hub for local farmers, producers, and restaurants to promote "zero-kilometer" ingredients.
Mayor Adolfo González and Tourism Councilor José David Cabrera noted that this year’s participation was part of a long-term strategy to elevate the town’s culinary reputation. The municipal team hosted 25 different activities, including live cooking demonstrations and guided tastings. These sessions allowed local experts—from winemakers and brewers to pastry chefs and butchers—to connect directly with the public and explain the origins and quality of their goods.
The program focused on three key themes: tradition, environmental responsibility, and culinary innovation. Featured local staples included gofio, regional wines, and the area’s famous potatoes. Beyond food, the City Council used the platform to highlight community initiatives, such as a new healthy school menu featuring local produce and the announcement of the upcoming third annual ‘Papa Bonita’ Cooking Contest, set for July during the Fiestas del Carmen.
This approach reflects a growing trend among Canarian towns to treat industry fairs as essential branding opportunities. By prioritizing the stories behind their products and involving local professionals, Los Realejos is successfully distinguishing itself in a competitive market, appealing to both everyday consumers and culinary experts.
