Los Realejos Residents Demand Total Block on Tigaiga Power Plant Project

Political tension in Los Realejos is reaching a breaking point ahead of the next plenary session. The neighborhood group "No eléctricas-Propano en la Cruz Santa" has drawn a firm line in the sand: they are demanding that the city council stop being ambiguous and commit to using every legal tool available to block the Tigaiga emergency power plant. The 14.8-megawatt project, led by Disa Generación, has sparked deep distrust among local residents.

While the city council previously suggested moving the plant to the La Gañanía Industrial Estate to avoid its original site, residents now reject this as an insufficient compromise. The platform insists that the council must oppose the project entirely, regardless of where it is placed within the municipality.

The project is significant in scale. Documents released in May 2026 outline a 23.38-million-euro investment, featuring eight engine-generators and two massive 200-cubic-meter propane tanks. Because the plant is considered strategic infrastructure with state funding intended to bolster Tenerife’s power grid, the situation is legally complex.

The residents are now demanding more than just political rhetoric. They want the city council to pass a formal agreement that would force the local government to file legal appeals if the regional authorization process moves forward. Their goal is to stop the project from receiving final approval before their May 2027 deadline.

This puts the municipal government in a difficult position. They must now reconcile their December 2025 agreement—which allowed for the relocation to La Gañanía—with the mounting public pressure to scrap the project entirely. The platform remains firm: they view the plant as incompatible with the local environment and will not accept any half-measures that merely delay the issue.
