Los Realejos PSOE Seeks to Reaffirm Total Veto on Tigaiga Power Plant

The debate over energy infrastructure in Los Realejos has reignited. The local PSOE council group has submitted a motion for the next plenary session, aiming to ensure the City Council officially rejects the Tigaiga Emergency Generation Plant, regardless of where it might be built.

The disagreement centers on how to interpret a unanimous agreement reached by the council on June 25, 2025. During that session, the council voted against hosting these facilities anywhere within municipal boundaries. With a new proposal now suggesting a site in La Cruz Santa, the Socialists argue that the original veto was absolute. According to spokesperson Eladio Hernández, the council must remain consistent by rejecting the plant whether it is proposed for La Zamora, El Mocán, or any other area in town.

The upcoming motion seeks to formally reaffirm the council’s previous stance. It calls on regional authorities to abandon plans to install the plant in Los Realejos and instead look for locations outside the municipality. The Socialists believe that moving the project to a different spot within the town would undermine their previous agreement, arguing that a change in location does not resolve the project’s negative impact on the local environment and residents' well-being.

This conflict reflects the ongoing tension between the need for reliable electricity in the Canary Islands and the right of local governments to manage their own land. The PSOE maintains that energy security should be achieved through more sustainable, less intrusive methods, emphasizing that their opposition to the Tigaiga plant is a firm political stance against projects that threaten the local environment and quality of life.
