The governments of Los Realejos and La Orotava have joined forces with winemakers to combat phylloxera, which threatens the island's vineyards, and are launching an information campaign for farmers.

Last Wednesday, the mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, together with the deputy mayor of La Orotava, Narciso Pérez, held a meeting at the Casa del Vino. They discussed a serious problem – phylloxera attacking the island's vineyards. Representatives of the DO Valle de La Orotava wine organization were invited to the meeting to find a solution together.

In addition to the mayors, the councilors for agriculture from both cities, Alexis Hernández (Los Realejos) and Alexis Pacheco (La Orotava), were present. There were also heads of the local police and a representative of Seprona (a unit of the Civil Guard).

They discussed how to combat the pest. They discussed the order of August 20 issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, and the measures that need to be taken to stop the spread of phylloxera.

The mayor of Los Realejos expressed serious concern, as the situation could harm viticulture on the island. He called on winemakers to take the problem seriously and follow all recommendations. Local authorities promise to use all possible resources to combat phylloxera.

Representatives from La Orotava also stressed the importance of joint action to prevent the pest from spreading.

Los Realejos and La Orotava, together with the wine organization, are planning to launch an information campaign for winegrowers. Los Realejos has already scheduled a meeting with winemakers for Monday at 13:00.

La Orotava is also informing winegrowers and farmers about the problem and inviting them to a meeting on September 2 at 19:00.

By the way, Santa Úrsula also held an information meeting on phylloxera to discuss the conditions for this year's harvest. Although no pest has yet been detected in Santa Úrsula, they are doing everything possible for prevention. More than a hundred industry representatives took part in the meeting.
