This Saturday, July 25, the town of Los Realejos will host the 12th annual Ancient Potato Exhibition. The event celebrates a crop that has been a cornerstone of island identity since it was first brought over from Peru four centuries ago.
The gathering highlights the importance of protecting the Canary Islands' unique genetic heritage, which is now safeguarded by a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Thanks to the islands' distinct climate and landscape, about 30 rare varieties have survived, resisting the trend of global agricultural standardization. By hosting this event in the Plaza de San Agustín, Los Realejos reinforces its role as a key historical site for plant conservation.
The day-long program features a variety of activities, including the third annual cooking contest, where four professional chefs will compete. Visitors can also attend workshops, meet local farmers, and watch live demonstrations. The event concludes with the Great Wine and Potato Festival, which brings together local wineries from the Valle de La Orotava and regional restaurants to support the local economy late into the night.
