Los Cristianos Port Nears Completion of €5.3 Million Breakwater Repairs
The Port of Los Cristianos in Tenerife is nearing the completion of a €5.3 million breakwater repair project, which utilizes night-time installation of concrete blocks while adhering to strict environmental protocols to protect local marine life.
The port of Los Cristianos in Tenerife is entering the final stage of repairs to its outer breakwater, which was damaged by rough seas. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority reports that the project has reached a key milestone: the installation of protective concrete blocks. To keep the busy port running smoothly, these heavy pieces are being installed at night.
The project costs 5.3 million euros, with the European Union providing over 4.5 million through ERDF funds. The work involves placing 400 concrete blocks, each weighing 30 tons, which were manufactured at the Granadilla Industrial Estate. These blocks form a new protective layer for the breakwater, and the project is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The construction team is following strict environmental protocols to protect the local marine life. This includes using anti-turbidity barriers to keep the water clean. Additionally, the work schedule was adjusted to protect the critically endangered angelshark. Because the construction overlapped with the shark's breeding season, all dumping of materials was paused between April and July. This highlights the ongoing effort to balance essential infrastructure projects with the preservation of the Canary Islands' unique biodiversity.
