Livestock Carrier Causes Foul Odor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are experiencing a foul odor caused by the livestock carrier Maysora, which is currently anchored off the coast for refueling.
Residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife woke up to an unpleasant smell on Tuesday, with the odor particularly strong near the city's fishing dock. According to Diario de Avisos, the smell is coming from the Maysora, a livestock carrier currently anchored just off the coast.
The ship, which can transport up to 110,000 animals, arrived on Monday afternoon solely to refuel before continuing its journey to the Turkish port of Iskenderun. While technical stops like this are common at the Port of Santa Cruz—a key hub for international shipping—the nature of the Maysora’s cargo has caused a noticeable environmental nuisance for the city.
The vessel is expected to leave the bay around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, at which point the air quality in the capital should return to normal.
While the transport of live animals is governed by strict international welfare and sanitary regulations, this incident highlights the challenges of balancing busy port operations with the daily lives of those living in coastal cities.
