In La Laguna, lifeguards assisted 757 beachgoers in the summer of 2025, recording a significant increase in the number of people rescued from the water and preventive measures taken.

This summer (from June 1 to August 1), lifeguards in La Laguna provided assistance 757 times on the beaches of Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo, Jover, and La Barranquera.

According to the city council, most cases (about 90%) were minor and did not require serious medical attention. Fortunately, there were no fatalities during this period.

This year, there has been an increase in the number of cases where lifeguards had to pull people out of the water: 65, compared to 16 in 2024. Lifeguards also carried out almost 83% more preventive actions (25,129 in 2025 versus 13,728 in 2024). In addition, 30 people with disabilities used special chairs to enter the water.

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Councilor for Beaches, Ángel Chinea, met with the lifeguards to thank them for their "incredible work" in ensuring the safety of beachgoers.

Ángel Chinea emphasized that people often ignore warnings and prohibitions, which forces lifeguards to risk their lives to rescue swimmers in hard-to-reach places. Therefore, he urged everyone to be sensible and responsible, to pay attention to warnings, information on posters, and instructions from lifeguards.

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez added that in 2025 they improved the beach safety system: they hired more lifeguards, installed new lifeguard towers, increased the number of special chairs for people with disabilities, and started using drones to respond to emergencies more quickly.
