Legal Win Propels Adein to Superliga Debut

After a legal victory restored their promotion, Santa Cruz Adein Tenerife Fundación CB Canarias (Adein) makes its Wheelchair Basketball Superliga debut today against Mideba Extremadura, aiming to avoid relegation with a smaller squad.

After three months of legal battles, stress, and a frantic rebuilding effort, Santa Cruz Adein Tenerife Fundación CB Canarias (Adein) is finally making its debut in the Wheelchair Basketball Superliga today at 5:30 PM. This is the top league in Spain, and their first game is against Mideba Extremadura. The circumstances are quite unusual. Just two weeks ago, a sports court ruled in favor of the Tenerife club. This decision overturned an earlier penalty for improperly fielding player Jhoan Sebastián Peña, a penalty that had cost them a promotion they had earned on the court months before.

That ruling completely changed the team's future. They had already planned to play in the First Division. Now, on November 1st, with very little time to reorganize and with most player transfers already finalized, Adein is entering the highest level of Spanish adapted basketball. They have a smaller squad than ideal, and some new players haven't joined yet. "We're realistic; our goal is to avoid relegation," says Tino Padrón, who is both the coach and, if needed, a player this season.

The journey to the top league for the "black and gold" team has been complicated. Last season, the Tenerife team finished second in the First Division, earning their promotion. However, this was later revoked due to a complaint about a player's improper registration. Adein appealed this decision. Two weeks ago, after the Administrative Sports Tribunal (TAD) ruled in their favor, the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Disabilities officially confirmed the Tenerife team's promotion.

The club has experienced a "roller coaster of emotions" in recent months – "negative, positive, and, ultimately, stressful," according to the coach. Adein, which had planned for stability and long-term growth, suddenly had to change its entire strategy very quickly. "I'm clear about things: for now, we'll see what happens. When the new players arrive, we'll truly be able to compete with the teams we need to beat. One will join next week, and the others before Christmas," Padrón explained. He admits that "some teams are out of our league because they are very strong, with top-level players." Still, he insists they will compete with pride. "Sport is sport, five against five, and you never know," he added.

Their first game is a tough challenge. They are playing Mideba Extremadura, a well-established Superliga team that often competes for the championship. The Badajoz team has been in the top league for over 20 years, has many strong players, and includes famous international stars. Adein, on the other hand, is just getting by. "We know what we have and what they have, but we will try to put up a fight," the coach from Tenerife promised.

More than just the final score, this match is highly symbolic. Many players from the "black and gold" team are making their Superliga debut today. "Many are nervous, which is normal, but once the game starts, we'll calm down and have fun, which is how it should be," Padrón said. Their clear message is to compete confidently, enjoy the experience, and start building a foundation to stay in the league – which would be a massive achievement in itself.

The coach understands that the first few months will be difficult. New players will join gradually, and the team will need to adjust to the faster pace of the top league. "We'll have a challenging month, but we hope the new signings will arrive, and from there we will build our real team," explained Padrón, who helped found the club with current president Ana Magali Rodríguez Palmero.

The "black and gold" squad combines experienced players with young talent: Benito, Zebensuí, Cristian, Alejandro, Parra, Chichirita, Ramón, Domingo, Jonay, and José Manuel. Their most significant new addition so far is Colombian international Federico López Rodríguez. They are a modest team with limited funds but a strong team spirit. No matter the outcome, their journey to this point is already a remarkable achievement.

There's more big news alongside Adein's Superliga debut, also from the legal world of sports. The Administrative Sports Tribunal has ruled in favor of the Tenerife club regarding the suspension of Colombian player Jhoan Sebastián Peña. Peña was a crucial player in the "black and gold" team's promotion last season, a promotion that was initially denied but eventually secured.

"Yesterday, we received official notice from the TAD ruling in our favor on that issue," confirmed Tino Padrón. He added that the decision means Peña "can play in Spain, though it now depends on whether the Spanish Federation accepts this ruling or decides to appeal."

Peña had been banned for three years due to a dispute with his former club in Valencia. Now, he could return to play before the end of the year. "I hope to have Sebas here on the island before Christmas," Padrón shared. Peña, a Colombian international, was unintentionally at the center of the events that led to Santa Cruz Adein Tenerife's penalty and the temporary loss of their promotion.

Peña's potential return would be more than just a boost for Tino Padrón's team. It would also mark the end of an unfair situation, giving the talented young player a chance to restart his career. "This case makes me more anxious because it's not about money or health, but about a young man's career," club president Ana Magali Rodríguez Palmero said weeks ago.

If the Spanish Federation accepts the TAD's decision, Adein could have Peña playing for them in the second half of the season. The club is very hopeful. "We believe things will progress naturally, and everything will be resolved positively," Padrón stated confidently.
