Left-wing coalition forms in Los Realejos to challenge PP dominance in 2027 elections

Left-wing groups in Los Realejos are joining forces ahead of the 2027 elections, hoping to end the Popular Party’s decade-long hold on the local government. According to Diario de Avisos, Podemos, IUC, and Izquierda Realejera have formed an alliance to unite parties to the left of the PSOE—a political space that has been absent from the municipal council for several terms.

The current council is dominated by the Popular Party, which has held an absolute majority of 15 seats since 2023. The opposition is currently split between five Socialist councilors and one from Coalición Canaria. The new coalition aims to reverse this trend, recalling that parties to the left of the PSOE once held up to three seats in the local government at the turn of the century.

The group plans to make housing its primary focus. This Saturday at 12:00 p.m., they will host a public debate at the Círculo Viera y Clavijo to launch their joint platform. Organizers chose housing because they believe rising costs and a lack of available homes are the biggest challenges facing the town’s working-class residents.

To ensure the discussion is well-informed, university professors Pablo Estévez, Meritxell Salazar, and Alejandro Armas Díaz will give presentations. The goal is to move beyond theory and engage directly with residents, a strategy the group has already piloted in areas like Tigaiga and La Cruz Santa. As they build this new coalition, the participating parties remain open to adding other groups, such as Nueva Canarias, to create a stronger, more competitive alternative for voters.
