Leal Theatre to Host 'A Contratiempo' Musical Benefiting ALS Patients
The Leal Theatre in La Laguna will host the premiere of the musical A Contratiempo this Thursday, with all proceeds supporting Teidela’s efforts to assist individuals living with ALS in the Canary Islands.
This Thursday, the Leal Theatre in La Laguna will host the premiere of A Contratiempo, a musical that blends artistic expression with a vital social cause. All proceeds from the performance will go to Teidela, an organization dedicated to supporting people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in the Canary Islands.
Directed by Laura Reyes, with music by Fernando Ortí and a script by Javier Rodríguez, the play is set in a contemporary art museum. It uses this backdrop to encourage the audience to reflect on how they spend their time. The performance begins at 8:00 PM and is part of the "The day we stopped to listen" campaign, which aims to end the isolation often faced by those with this neurodegenerative condition.
The event highlights a pressing healthcare reality. There are currently 146 people diagnosed with ALS in the Canary Islands, a condition that requires extensive, ongoing support, including physical and psychological therapy. Since 2021, Teidela has been working to coordinate these essential services, filling gaps in the current healthcare system.
Tickets for Thursday’s show are available at the box office and via Tickety.es. The awareness campaign will continue throughout the month, with public buildings lighting up in green on June 21st for World ALS Day, followed by the opening of the documentary exhibition ALS. Intimate Visions on June 29th. Through these events, organizers hope to bring the conversation about ALS into the public eye, advocating for increased research funding and better support for affected families.
