LAV Canarias has launched "Anti-racist Shores," an international residency program in Uruguay that uses performing arts to explore migration history and support Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s 2031 European Capital of Culture bid.

LAV Canarias has launched "Anti-racist Shores," an international residency project that uses art to explore the shared history between the Canary Islands, Uruguay, and Italy. More than just an exhibition, the initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties and support Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031, highlighting the archipelago’s role as a key Atlantic hub.

The project centers on the 300th anniversary of Canarian families settling in Uruguay. By looking back at this history, the residency aims to spark a modern conversation about migration. The program will take place in Canelones, Uruguay, from June 15 to 21, 2026, serving as a creative laboratory for live arts and movement. Selected artists will receive full coverage for travel, accommodation, and daily expenses, plus a 1,000-euro stipend.

The organizers are looking for performing arts and movement professionals who can explore themes of identity, territory, and the impact of migration. Interested applicants must submit their proposals by May 4, 2026. The selected participants will be announced on May 10 via the official LAV Canarias channels.

Ultimately, the program is designed to be a space for reflection. By connecting historical migration with today’s social challenges, the project uses performance and the human body to challenge exclusion and encourage meaningful intercultural dialogue.
