Laura Morales Brings ‘Ser Pastora’ to Teatro Leal in La Laguna
Choreographer Laura Morales Dávila will present her contemporary dance piece Ser Pastora, which explores identity and oral tradition through the metaphor of transhumance, at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on March 25th.
The Spanish dance scene is once again looking to its roots with the arrival of Ser Pastora at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. As part of the ‘Danza en Breve’ series, the performance will take place on March 25th at 7:00 p.m., highlighting a space dedicated to bridging oral tradition with contemporary movement.
Led by choreographer and dancer Laura Morales Dávila, the piece goes beyond a standard performance to explore transhumance as a metaphor for identity. Morales, who trained at the Antonio Ruiz Soler Conservatory in Seville and the Andalusian Dance Center, uses her work to blur the lines between myth and everyday life. In this production, the figure of the shepherdess acts as a bridge, connecting literary archetypes—from Cervantes to ancient mythology—with modern discussions about territory and personal autonomy.
The performance follows the solar cycle of a day in the countryside, allowing Morales to explore various emotional states, from the morning routine to the rituals of the night. This approach highlights how dance can serve as a living archive of memory, positioning the body as a form of resistance against the fast-paced, impersonal nature of modern life.
The project features a multidisciplinary team supporting Morales’ vision, including dramaturg Julio León and assistant director Alessandra García. The production’s technical and aesthetic elements are managed by lighting designer Benito Jiménez, sound designer Isabel Do Diego, costume designer Gloria Trenado, and character designer Sarah Kceres. Verónica Morales manages the production, with distribution by Inma Juárez and graphic design by Cani Galán.
With this performance in La Laguna, Morales—who is also currently touring with Truca Circus’s El Círculo—reaffirms her status as a unique voice in Andalusian choreography, known for blending folklore with avant-garde performance.
