Las Teresitas Hosts International Optimist Regatta with Young Sailors
The Las Teresitas International Regatta, featuring around 100 young Optimist sailors from various regions, kicks off today and runs through Sunday at the capital's beach, offering nine races and additional beachside activities.
The Las Teresitas International Regatta for Optimist sailboats is happening today and Sunday at the capital's beach.
Around a hundred young sailors from Tenerife, other Canary Islands, mainland Spain, and even abroad are taking part. Many of them also attended a training clinic here this week, seeing the regatta as a chance to put their new skills to the test.
Nine races are planned. The competition will be official if at least two races are completed. After the fourth race, sailors can drop their worst score.
Prizes will be given to the top three boys and girls in the U11, U13, and U16 age groups.
The race area will be set up either off Santa Cruz or Anaga, depending on the weather. Forecasters expect moderate north-easterly winds, which are common here and influenced by the Anaga ravines.
Besides the sailing, there will be other activities on the beach, like workshops and introductory sailing courses. This is all thanks to the hard work of volunteers from IES Garoé and IES El Médano, who are studying to become sports technicians.
The event was officially presented yesterday at the Santiago Martín Pavilion. Among those present were Yolanda Moliné, the Cabildo de Tenerife's Minister of Sports, and Alicia Cebrián, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council's Councilor for Sports.
