Las Palmas to Host PR X Canarias Celebrating Transatlantic Cultural Ties
The Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the PR X Canarias event on August 1st, featuring performances by Chuwi, Villano Antillano, and Ptazeta to celebrate the cultural and artistic ties between the Canary Islands and Puerto Rico.
On August 1st, the Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will become a hub for transatlantic culture. As part of the Culture & Business Pride program, the event—titled PR X Canarias—aims to strengthen the historical and artistic bonds between the Canary Islands and Puerto Rico through a free celebration of diversity and shared identity.
The lineup features Chuwi, a band from Isabela that gained international fame after joining Bad Bunny’s global tour. Formed in 2019 by the Aldarondo brothers and Adrián López, the group has become a standout in the Caribbean indie scene, blending jazz, indie, and traditional island rhythms. Their work on the album Debí tirar más fotos helped launch their career, and this event marks their debut in the Canary Islands.
The gathering highlights the connection between modern urban music and cultural heritage. Joining Chuwi on stage are rapper Villano Antillano and local artist Ptazeta, both of whom are leading voices in the urban music scene in their respective regions. The program also includes a strong visual and performance element, featuring the This is Drag show and La Casita Queer—an installation that reimagines the aesthetic of a recent Puerto Rican tour through an Atlantic and LGBTQ+ lens.
More than just a concert, this event celebrates the deep ties between the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, two regions linked by a long history of migration and cultural blending. By focusing on collective memory and social change, the event provides a platform for a new generation of creators who use music to reflect on the realities of today’s world.
