'Las Kellys' Hotel Housekeepers Call for Nationwide Strike Over Working Conditions
The "Kellys" hotel housekeeper movement has called for a nationwide general strike in Spain to demand better working conditions and an end to the outsourcing practices that undermine their labor rights.
A recent meeting in Adeje, Tenerife, marks a significant turning point for the "Kellys"—the movement of hotel housekeepers who have successfully turned their fight against precarious working conditions into a major political issue. Following this assembly, the group is now calling for a nationwide general strike, urging major unions to lead a coordinated work stoppage across the country.
The movement began fourteen years ago as a spontaneous social media discussion about the harsh realities of hotel work. Since then, it has evolved from an online support group into a powerful political force. The Kellys have met with various government leaders and successfully campaigned for the recognition of work-related musculoskeletal injuries. Interestingly, spokespersons for the group note that they achieved more tangible results during the Mariano Rajoy administration than under the current government, despite the latter's previous campaign promises to reform labor laws.
A major point of contention remains the disconnect between policy and the reality on the ground. For example, the introduction of ergonomic equipment, such as height-adjustable beds, often fails because workers are not consulted during the design process. Furthermore, the continued practice of outsourcing—which the movement views as a deliberate tactic to weaken union power—keeps tensions high.
Sociologically, the movement’s success lies in its ability to highlight the essential, yet often invisible, labor that sustains Spain’s tourism industry. While union organization is stronger in regions like the Canary and Balearic Islands, working conditions remain inconsistent across the country. By pushing for a national general strike, the Kellys—supported by Sindicalistas de Base—aim to bridge these regional gaps, overcome the fragmentation caused by outsourcing, and demand regulations that truly reflect the physical and professional realities of the hotel industry’s most vital workforce.
