"Laguna" was eliminated from the Federation Cup, losing to "Toledo" in extra time.
CD Laguna lost to CD Toledo in the Round of 16 of the Federation Cup, putting on a decent performance despite the defeat in extra time with a score of 1-2.
The CD Laguna boys lost in the Round of 16 of the Federation Cup at the "Sebastián Hernández Brito" stadium in Ofra, but put on a great football display against CD Toledo, one of the leaders of the Tercera RFEF of Castilla-La Mancha. Fabián Rivero's team fought to the end and can be proud of themselves, as they rose to the occasion, which brings them closer to the level they deserve.
From the beginning, it was clear what the match would be like. A tense game, not too fast-paced, where both teams understood that a lot was at stake. The "violets" tried to attack on the right flank, where Omar Ramos (who has played more than 30 matches in the Primera División) orchestrated the few attacks they managed to create in the first half. The first 10 minutes were only memorable for two long-range free kicks (one for each team) that came to nothing. Both teams were not taking risks and played cautiously.
Ángel Galván was first seriously called into action after a long-range shot, spectacularly turning the ball away for a corner (11'). Three minutes later, Toledo created the most dangerous chance. Laguna pressed unsuccessfully, and Toledo transitioned into an attack that ended with a shot by David Luna. Galván saved his team again.
As time went on, it became clear how the game would develop. Toledo had a lot of possession but couldn't create real chances. Laguna played directly, trying to find Gabriel Guzmán, who was often isolated from the team. Fabián Rivero's men held on thanks to Ángel Galván, who again played confidently, blocking Peña's shot from the edge of the penalty area (34').
Toledo was close to scoring again in the 38th minute, again after a cross from the wing. Adrián Moraleda crossed a curling ball into the penalty area from the left. There, Nader jumped and headed the ball, but it went just wide of the post.
Laguna was waiting for their chance, and it came after their first shot on target. Patto shot with his left foot into the corner of Quintela's goal after an accurate low cross from Pablo Amate on the right at the end of the first half. Just one shot on goal, one goal, 1-0 at half-time. Laguna played worse but took their only chance.
The second half started in the same way. Fabián Rivero's team again retreated into defence, waiting for their chance. Toledo was the first to try to score, but Meneses' volley was inaccurate (48'). Emiliano Trovento, a winger who recently joined from the Segunda RFEF, added freshness and composure to the "violets'" game.
And when it seemed that the match had calmed down... Ángel Galván showed his class again. The former CD Tenerife player again dived to his left to pull off an incredible save and prevent an almost certain goal in the 67th minute. But that was just the beginning. Three minutes later, Toledo, boosted by four substitutions, was rewarded for their persistence: a dangerous cross from the left and a header from Frias in the six-yard box. The score became 1-1. Justice for some, punishment for others.
After that, Toledo began to push. Peña had two shots, but his efforts were inaccurate. Laguna responded in the 83rd minute when Trovento turned in front of the penalty area and shot just wide of the post.
Immediately after that came the decisive moment. Laguna's centre-back Reyes fouled, and the referee awarded an obvious penalty. Frias took responsibility... and missed. Ángel Galván saved his team again. In the 89th minute, the Laguna goalkeeper made another incredible save, allowing his team to reach extra time. A great reward, despite Laguna being inferior in the game.
Extra time started intensely, with two yellow cards almost in quick succession for Toledo. The pace of the game slowed down, and chances became fewer. Molina's modest attempt from the left wing was easily neutralised by the incomparable Ángel Galván. The decisive moment came at the end of the first half of extra time. Molina won a duel against Facu and went one-on-one with Galván from a narrow angle. The ball went past the right post. But the episode did not end there. Facu, in an absurd act, stepped on the Toledo striker's head. The referee showed him a straight red card.
In the second half, Laguna regrouped, bringing on Samu in the left centre-back position. Toledo controlled the ball in Laguna's half, looking for the decisive blow. And they delivered it. In the 107th minute, Nanclares crossed, and Frias scored a goal that seemed definitive. The score became 1-2. But Laguna did not give up. Trovento first tried a long-range shot, and then in added time, he came close to an epic goal, heading just wide of the post after a cross from the wing. Laguna finished the match with nine men due to Trovento's dismissal but lost with honour. Now they need to switch their focus to the league, where they will play against Buzanada on Saturday, aiming for promotion to the Tercera División.
