La Victoria de Acentejo Completes €1.5 Million Modernization of Disability Occupational Center
La Victoria de Acentejo has unveiled a modernized 1.5-million-euro occupational center, increasing capacity to 60 places as part of a regional effort to decentralize and improve disability care services in northern Tenerife.
The recent modernization of the occupational center in La Victoria de Acentejo marks a significant milestone for social and healthcare services in northern Tenerife. More than just a building renovation, this project highlights the importance of decentralizing disability care. By moving specialized services out of large cities and into local communities, the region is ensuring fairer access to essential support.
The project, which cost 1.5 million euros, involved a complete redesign of the facilities on Calle Añate. The 1,300-square-meter space now features updated dining areas, multipurpose workshops, and improved outdoor and parking areas. These upgrades prioritize energy efficiency and accessibility, while also increasing the center’s capacity from 46 to 60 places to meet rising local demand.
This initiative is part of the Social and Healthcare Infrastructure Plan, a collaborative effort between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council of Tenerife, and the local council. With a total investment of 2.4 million euros, officials at the inauguration emphasized that this project represents a shift toward making social services more accessible and community-focused.
Occupational centers are vital for fostering personal independence and community integration for people with disabilities. By adding this facility to the existing network in La Victoria de Acentejo—which already includes a day center for the elderly and the La Vera disability center—the region is working to remove the geographical barriers that have long made it difficult for people in rural or peripheral areas to receive care. Ultimately, these renovations reflect a commitment to prioritizing the quality of life for users and their families through efficient public management.
