La Rambla Residents Protest for Safe Access
The 'Todos con la Rambla' neighborhood group will protest this Sunday, demanding effective safety solutions for a dangerous intersection in Tenerife, citing years of official inaction despite their proposed temporary fixes.
The 'Todos con la Rambla' neighborhood group is holding another protest this Sunday at noon. They are demanding safe access to their neighborhood, a request they've been making since 2021. This protest highlights how frustrated residents are that authorities haven't found real solutions.
Since the group first made its demands, the Cabildo de Tenerife (Tenerife Island Council) has put in a bus stop and started planning new projects. However, Adela Abreu, a spokesperson for the group, says these steps haven't fixed the safety problem at the intersection. Last year, a young woman was hit by a car there.
Over three years ago, the group suggested temporary fixes to make the area safer. These included painting yellow road markings, putting up signs to slow traffic, and building a small island to make it easier to enter the neighborhood and turn towards Santa Cruz. This would also help residents avoid a six-kilometer detour. However, the island council rejected these ideas, arguing that they wouldn't guarantee safety.
The people of La Rambla feel abandoned because their suggestions for improving safety are being ignored. They believe these ideas could offer a quick fix while the Cabildo works on its longer-term projects. The platform has stated it will keep pushing for a temporary solution as official procedures move slowly through different government departments.
