La Palma Council Buys 53 Homes for Eruption Victims
The La Palma Island Council has purchased a 53-home building for 10.3 million euros in Los Llanos de Aridane, funded by the Canary Islands Government, to rehouse victims most affected by the volcanic eruption.
The La Palma Island Council has taken a major step in helping the island recover from the volcanic eruption. They have officially bought a building that is still under construction in Los Llanos de Aridane.
The 53 new homes in this building will be given first to people most affected by the eruption, especially those currently living in temporary container or wooden houses. Decisions will be based on social needs.
Island president Sergio Rodríguez announced that the Island Council bought the building for 10.3 million euros. This funding came from the Ministry of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice, and Security, which is part of the Canary Islands Government.
President Rodríguez also thanked the Canary Islands Government for their "understanding and huge effort" in making this project happen. He specifically mentioned Minister Nieves Lady Barreto and Deputy Minister Pedro Afonso.
Sergio Rodríguez stressed that achieving this goal required a lot of work from various institutions and changes to laws. He explained, "To make this happen, we had to create new laws. The Island Council also had to take on housing responsibilities, which it didn't have before. This shows how committed both governments are."
This entire process took months of work, starting with finding suitable homes to buy and then officially completing the purchase, making sure everything followed the new housing law.
Rodríguez emphasized that buying this building shows the result of all that effort, but it's just the beginning. They plan to continue working towards their housing goals for this term of office.
