La Orotava is drafting a new mobility ordinance to address parking shortages by imposing a 30-day limit on street parking, banning the display of vehicles for sale, and strengthening enforcement of accessibility regulations.

La Orotava is set to update its public space regulations, according to El Día. The local government is drafting a new mobility ordinance to close legal loopholes that have previously prevented the city from moving vehicles that sit in parking spots for months without being officially classified as "abandoned."

The core of the proposal is a 30-day limit for parking in the same spot. This measure aims to increase parking turnover, addressing a chronic shortage caused by long-term inactive vehicles. Additionally, the City Council plans to ban the practice of using public streets as commercial showrooms. The new rules will prohibit displaying vehicles for sale, a move designed to free up space for residents and prevent unfair competition against licensed car dealerships.

The draft also prioritizes accessibility. The government, led by Coalición Canaria, has included stricter controls to ensure that spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility are used correctly, granting the Local Police more authority to penalize violations.

Narciso Pérez, the Councilor for Security and Emergencies, stated that the goal is to give municipal services the tools needed to resolve everyday issues that currently lack a clear administrative solution. The proposal has been shared with opposition parties—the PP, PSOE, and Asamblea Por La Orotava—and will soon be available on the city’s website for public review. Residents will have the opportunity to provide feedback before the document goes to a plenary session for final approval. Once published in the official gazette, the new regulations and penalties will take effect.
