Volunteers in La Orotava are constructing a massive, 900-square-meter tapestry from volcanic sand to celebrate the Corpus Christi festival, blending religious tradition with local nature and contemporary social themes.

The Great Corpus Christi Tapestry in La Orotava is more than just a work of art; it is a defining symbol of Canary Islands culture. As preparations get underway in the Town Hall square, crews are building this massive 900-square-meter installation using volcanic sand sustainably sourced from Teide National Park.

The tapestry, set to be unveiled on June 11, is the result of two months of careful planning. Led by artist Domingo González Expósito, a team of 23 volunteers from the ArteArena association will arrange roughly 3,000 kilograms of natural sediment. By using only naturally weathered materials, the team achieves a palette of 300 distinct shades without the need for artificial dyes, highlighting a deep commitment to environmental conservation.

This year’s theme, "Canarian Paradise," blends religious tradition with local nature. The design features endemic wildlife, such as the blue chaffinch and the blue tit, alongside symbols marking the 775th anniversary of the Holy Scapular and the 75th anniversary of the town’s consecration to the Virgin of Carmen. The tapestry also addresses modern social issues, including the humanitarian work of the Red Cross and a tribute to the Pope.

The project has sparked a local conversation about the role of ephemeral art. While many residents celebrate the tapestry as a beautiful tribute to tradition and nature, others argue that such public displays should also address contemporary global challenges. This tension between religious heritage and the call for social commentary keeps the tapestry relevant. Despite its temporary nature, the installation remains a cornerstone of Tenerife’s festive calendar, drawing visitors from around the world to witness this unique artisanal craft.
