La Orotava Prepares for Annual Corpus Christi Celebrations and Wine Competition
La Orotava is set to celebrate its traditional Corpus Christi festivities on June 11, featuring elaborate floral carpets, religious processions, and the 48th 'Villa de La Orotava' Wine Competition.
La Orotava is preparing for one of its most important cultural events of the year. As part of the festivities honoring San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, the town will celebrate Corpus Christi on June 11. This event is more than just a religious occasion; it is a vital part of the community’s identity and a major draw for tourism in the valley.
The historic center will be the heart of the celebration, where 36 groups—including local families and associations—will spend the day creating elaborate floral carpets across the streets. This intricate work requires careful planning and serves as the path for the Blessed Sacrament procession. The Bishop of Tenerife, Eloy Santiago, will lead the service, accompanied by local choirs and the Orotava Musical Association, who will perform traditional hymns like 'Tantum Ergo' and 'Cantemos al Amor de los Amores' as the procession reaches the Town Hall square.
The day begins early with bells ringing at the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, where the first mass will be held at 7:15 a.m. Following a midday service, a second mass will take place at 6:30 p.m.
Alongside the religious events, the local wine industry will be in the spotlight at the Sociedad Liceo de Taoro. Starting at 10:30 a.m., the 48th 'Villa de La Orotava' Wine Competition will showcase wines from local growers and wineries across the island. The event is supported by the City Council, the Cabildo of Tenerife, and the local Regulatory Council.
The festivities will conclude with a solemn blessing from the town hall balcony, followed by the return of the Blessed Sacrament to the main parish church. This celebration highlights La Orotava’s dedication to preserving its heritage, bringing together civil and religious leaders with the local community to maintain the traditions that define the town.
