La Orotava Pledges €1 Million to Upgrade TF-21 Road Safety

La Orotava City Council has pledged over one million euros to upgrade the TF-21 road, aiming to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility following a six-year campaign by local residents.

Road safety on the TF-21 access to La Orotava is entering a crucial stage after years of campaigning by local residents. The City Council has pledged over one million euros to upgrade the Las Cuevas road, aiming to fix long-standing issues with pedestrian safety and accessibility.

The council’s plan, shared with the Humboldt platform, covers the stretch from the Las Cuevas development to the town center. The design focuses on building new pedestrian paths and improving sidewalks, while preserving existing trees and reorganizing parking. It also includes traffic-calming measures to lower speed limits to between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour.

Narciso Pérez Hernández, the Councilor for Land Management and Planning, highlighted the administrative challenges of the project. Because the road is owned by the Cabildo of Tenerife, the council must coordinate with the island government before starting the land acquisition process. While the council aims to begin these acquisitions before 2026, officials are being cautious, noting that the budget is an estimate and the process is complex. Importantly, the council expects that these land acquisitions will not affect any nearby homes.

For local neighborhood groups, this announcement marks the end of a six-year campaign. The Humboldt platform has reviewed the plans and, while suggesting some improvements, agrees that the project is a vital step toward keeping residents safe. The focus now shifts to political follow-through, as residents look for the project to move from the planning stage to construction, finally resolving the mobility issues that have long affected the area.
