La Orotava has opened registration for the 89th edition of the Romería of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, which is set to take place on June 14 with strict safety and animal welfare regulations.

La Orotava is gearing up for the 90th anniversary of the Romería of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza. The Liceo de Taoro, which is organizing the event alongside the local council, has officially opened registration for the traditional parade, scheduled for June 14.

The procession will follow its usual route from the San Francisco area to El Calvario. While the event has a 90-year history, this will be the 89th edition due to the pause taken during the global health crisis. With over 25,000 people expected to attend, the Romería remains one of the most significant cultural events in the Canary Islands.

The parade is limited to 75 carts, plus the float for the festival queen and her court. Registration is open until May 13, with priority given to local residents for the first three weeks. Applications can be submitted in person at the Liceo de Taoro or through their online portal, provided all necessary documentation and fees are included.

This year’s safety regulations place a strong emphasis on animal welfare and general security. All vehicles must be equipped with front brakes, proper poles, and balanced loads. Additionally, participants must carry fire extinguishers, and any braziers used must be fueled exclusively by charcoal.

To keep the parade running smoothly, the organizers have set specific placement rules. Groups registered in the municipal census will be given priority for the first 30 spots, while carts accompanied by musical groups will be prioritized for the first 40 positions, provided they register together. These measures are designed to maintain the order and tradition of a celebration that remains a vital part of La Orotava’s identity.
