La Orotava has launched its third annual coffee route, featuring nearly twenty local businesses competing to showcase traditional drinks like the barraquito and zaperoco to boost regional tourism and the local economy.

Canarian cuisine is enjoying a resurgence, with a focus on its most traditional roots. To celebrate this, the La Orotava City Council is launching the third edition of its coffee route. This event highlights the barraquito and the zaperoco—two iconic local drinks that are considered essential parts of the island's social and cultural heritage.

Running from October 5 to 31, the event features nearly twenty local businesses. The initiative aims to boost the local economy while engaging customers through a digital voting system. By scanning QR codes, visitors can rate their coffee experiences, a system that drew over 1,800 votes last year. To encourage participation, those who vote will be entered into a raffle to win a stay at the Parador in Teide National Park.

Deisy Ramos, head of the Department of Commerce, noted that these competitions are a great way to showcase the hard work of local hospitality professionals. The event is part of a broader strategy to strengthen La Orotava’s appeal to tourists by connecting visitors with local products and culinary traditions.

This initiative is part of a wider trend in Spain, where local governments are using food and drink culture to drive regional development. By turning coffee into an interactive experience, the town hopes to support local businesses and strengthen the community.
