The La Orotava City Council is launching a new economic stimulus program on September 8 to help local families manage the costs of the back-to-school season.
The council has allocated 300,000 euros for this initiative. Of that total, 265,000 euros will go directly toward subsidizing purchases, while the remaining funds will cover administrative and technical costs.
Under this scheme, residents can buy 20-euro vouchers for half price, with the city council covering the other 10 euros. Each person can purchase up to ten vouchers, allowing for a total saving of 100 euros on 200 euros worth of spending.
The program is being managed in partnership with the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA). Local businesses interested in participating can register through FAUCA, while residents can purchase their vouchers starting September 8 via a dedicated website.
This initiative serves two main purposes: providing financial relief to families facing rising costs and encouraging residents to shop at local businesses rather than large retail chains or online platforms. By keeping spending within the community, the council hopes to provide a much-needed boost to local small and medium-sized enterprises.
