La Orotava City Council is advancing a €2.5 million project for a new 245-space parking facility in La Torrita, funded by regional and local governments, to improve mobility and reduce traffic in the historic centre.

La Orotava City Council is moving ahead with plans for a new parking area in the La Torrita district. This new facility will offer 245 parking spaces. The local government says this project delivers on a promise to residents of Villa de Arriba, making parking easier and helping to ease traffic around the historic town centre.

Gesplan, a public company focused on territorial and environmental planning, has been commissioned to design the project. It will include vehicle access from Villalba Hervás and Teobaldo Power streets. A direct and safe pedestrian path will also connect the parking area to Victoria Garden and the historic centre. To help the facility blend in, the project also involves planting vegetation in the surrounding areas.

The construction is expected to take twelve months and will cost more than 2.5 million euros. The Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo de Tenerife will each contribute one million euros, with La Orotava City Council covering the remaining amount of over half a million euros. This is separate from the 1.3 million euros the council already spent to acquire the land for the project.

The chosen site for the project spans over 8,000 square meters, with approximately 3,000 square meters dedicated to parking across two different levels. This initiative aligns with the goals of Agenda 2030 and the municipality's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (Pemus). These plans aim to create a historic centre that is more focused on people and less dependent on private cars. The new La Torrita parking lot, located just a few meters from the historic centre, will allow drivers to park on the outskirts and walk into the centre. It will also promote the use of low-emission vehicles by installing electric charging points.

This new parking facility is also part of the council's broader strategy to create parking areas close to the historic centre and commercial zone. The goal is to improve mobility, accessibility, and the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors to La Orotava.
