La Orotava has declared a state of emergency to expedite over four million euros in repairs following extensive damage caused by Storm Therese.

La Orotava City Council has declared a state of emergency to fast-track repairs following the damage caused by Storm Therese. This administrative move cuts through red tape, allowing the council to speed up contracts and public works. Initial estimates suggest the repair bill will exceed four million euros.

The storm caused widespread damage across several areas, including Cañeño, Mamio, Las Medianías, El Sauce, Cruz de Los Martillos, and the San Jerónimo Industrial Estate. Local authorities are now working closely with the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) to manage the recovery. While emergency crews have been on the ground since the storm hit, the complexity of the damage required a thorough technical assessment to ensure that upcoming repairs are safe and effective.

Mayor Francisco Linares confirmed that the city will use its own funds to cover the costs, though he may seek financial support from other government bodies. Beyond immediate repairs, the City Council is working with the Island Water Council and the Cabildo’s Department of Roads on a long-term plan. The goal is to better protect the municipality’s most vulnerable areas against future extreme weather, moving beyond simple reconstruction toward more permanent, structural improvements.
