La Orotava Celebrates 20th "Pueblo a Pueblo" Festival Honoring Canary Island Heritage
La Orotava is hosting the 20th edition of the "Pueblo a Pueblo" festival on May 16, featuring traditional performances dedicated to preserving the rural and ethnographic heritage of the Canary Islands.
La Orotava is celebrating the preservation of Canary Island culture with the 20th edition of the "Pueblo a Pueblo" (Village to Village) Festival. Organized by the Oroval group, this event is a highlight of the town’s upcoming patron saint celebrations.
The festival, titled "Ecos de mi patio" (Echoes of My Courtyard), will take place on Saturday, May 16, at 9:00 p.m. in the Plaza de Franchy Alfaro. It offers a deep look into the rural history of the islands through three distinct performances. The evening begins with a tribute to the daily customs and domestic life of Tenerife’s peasantry. This will be followed by a performance from Echentive, a group from La Palma with over 50 years of experience researching and documenting the ethnographic traditions of Fuencaliente. The event will conclude with the hosts, Oroval, performing a selection of traditional folk music from Tenerife.
Beyond entertainment, these gatherings are vital for protecting the islands' intangible heritage. As modernization threatens the oral traditions of the past, groups like Oroval and Echentive play a crucial role in keeping history alive. By focusing on the "courtyard" as a center of community life, the festival highlights how private and shared spaces have shaped the islands' collective memory, while fostering a meaningful dialogue between the traditions of the different islands.
