La Orotava has begun preparations for its 2026 Corpus Christi carpet, a community-led project that blends traditional volcanic art with tributes to the Canary Islands' natural landscape, the Pope’s upcoming visit, and humanitarian solidarity.

Preparations are already underway in La Orotava for the 2026 Corpus Christi carpet, an event that continues to blend the island's natural beauty with social and religious themes. This year’s design, titled "Canarian Paradise, an offering to the Virgin of Carmen," builds on the previous year’s work by highlighting the archipelago's unique environment.

Work has begun in the Town Hall square to outline the design, which features iconic local landmarks and wildlife, including Mount Teide, the sea of clouds, the blue chaffinch, tajinastes, and hibiscus. The use of warm colors is intended to emphasize the natural landscape as a form of devotional tribute.

The 2026 edition also aims to reflect current events. The design includes a depiction of the Pope to mark his upcoming visit to the islands, which is scheduled for the day after the festivities. Additionally, the inclusion of the Red Cross symbol serves as a humanitarian message, highlighting the importance of solidarity regarding the migration crisis in the Canary Islands.

The technical work began last Monday and will move into its most recognizable phase this Wednesday, when artists begin pouring volcanic earth—the material that gives these carpets their signature texture and color. This year’s project is a true community effort, featuring three generations of carpet makers working side-by-side. This passing of the torch ensures that this unique cultural tradition remains vibrant and continues to evolve alongside the milestones and concerns of the present day.
